The name is derived from the Hungarian common noun erdő meaning ‘forest’ or from a Hungarian place name (settlement name, derived from the above-mentioned common noun) Erdő with the suffix -i. It may also be derived from the dialectal form of the Hungarian place name Erdély ‘Transylvania’ (name of a region of historical Hungary, today part of Romania) with the suffix -i and refer to a place of origin.
